INDIAN PEACE MEDALS (You are here)

The Indian Peace Medals produced for Thomas Jefferson's administration began the series of round medals bearing the image of the President of the United States on the obverse and a symbol of peace on the reverse.  The original medals were made from two die struck pieces of silver, fastened together with a collar and pierced or fitted with rings for suspension. They were hollow and made in three sizes - 105MM (rings), 75MM (pierced) and 55MM (rings).

These medals were given as gifts to Indian Chiefs, who later used them as "passports" when they visited Washington D.C.
