Verendrye Monument
Verendrye Drive
Fort Pierre, South Dakota
In 1743, Louis Verendrye and his brother planted a lead
plate on a hillside overlooking Fort Pierre claiming the land for Louis
XV, King of France. The plate was un-earthed accidentally in 1913 by
school children and is on display in the
Cultural Heritage Center.
The monument marks the spot where the plate was discovered.
