Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with members of their
expedition, camped in this area from
15 to 25 November 1805. From this point they
saw the breakers of the Pacific Ocean and knew that they had completed the mission
assigned to them by President Thomas Jefferson. Their overland journey established a
new claim for the United States to this region.
An historic vote was taken on November 24, 1805 to
decide where the expedition would spend the winter.
Everyone had the opportunity to vote, including
York and
Sacajawea. Majority voted to cross the Columbia River and look for a site that would
provide hunting, salt-making, and possibly await the arrival of a trading vessel.
