History of Theatre
-
September 8, 1902: Grand Opening as the
"Yankton Opera House"
-
January 28, 1921: New ownership
& renamed to "Hess Theatre". Grand Re-Opening showcased a $10,000 pipe
organ, cushioned opera chairs, and large pendant chandeliers.

December 10, 1922: Historic concert was
performed at The Hess Theatre; Yankton Municipal Band performed live on WNAX Radio.

April 22, 1929: First "talking
picture" - "Syncopation"
-
1929: Hess Theatre renamed to the
"Dakota Theatre"
-
1963: Commonwealth Theatre purchases the
"Dakota Theatre"
-
1965: Remodeling of lobby and concession
stand added
-
1987: The "Dakota Theatre" closes
its doors and is put up for sale
-
1990: Dakota Theatre, Inc., a
non-profit organization, purchases the building from local resident Robert Jensen
-
1993: Grand Re-Opening of "Dakota
Theatre", restored and ready for a new generation to enjoy!
