August 1, 1805

The Captains agree on their former plan: " as had been previously agreed on between Capt. Clark and myself I set out with 3 men in quest of the Snake Indians. The men I took were the two Interpreters Drewyer and Sharbono and Sergt. Gass. The rout we took lay over a rough high range of mountains on the North side of the river."Lewis

"it being Cpt. Clarks birth day he ordered some flour gave out to the party*".  Whitehouse

* Whitehouse is the only diarist to mention Clark's birthday.  Although Clark did mention his thirty-fifth birthday, the next day.

August 2, 1805

Clark proceeds with great difficulty. Lewis, traveling ahead of the party, is on a quest in search of Sacagawea’s people.  Clark writes: " passed a Small Creek on the Stard. Side called birth Creek* and maney large and Small Islands."

*Named for Clark’s birthday (August 1) it is now White Tail Deer Creek, near Whitehall, Montana.

August 3, 1805

Private Shannon, the youngest member of the Corps of Discovery, is lost … again: " Shannon had been dispatched up the rapid fork this morning to hunt, .. we had the trumpet sounded and fired several guns but he did not join us this evening. I am fearful he is lost again."

August 4, 1805

Lewis and his party continue to scout ahead in search of Sacagawea’s people. Clark and his party continue to struggle through the rapids. Captain Clark writes: " the method we are compelled to take to get on is fatiguing & laborious in the extreen, haul the Canoes over the rapids, men wet all day sore feet."

August 5, 1805

Lewis continues scouting ahead in search of Sacagawea’s people, meanwhile Clark continues to struggle along the rapids: " the river Streight & much more rapid than yesterday, proceeded on with great difficuelity."

August 6, 1805

The group, minus Shannon, are reunited near Twin Bridges, Montana: "I hear the hooping of the party to my left and changed my rout towards them."

August 7, 1805

Private Shannon, the youngest member of the Corps of Discovery, is still missing: " Dispatched Reubin Fields in surch of Shannon. We not heard any thing from Shannon yet, we expect that he has pursued Wisdom River upwards for som distance probably killed some heavy animal and is waiting our arrival."
